The group is focused on development informatics, researching several aspects of the relationship between informatics and development, with the premise that technology is fundamental to all development, in particular ICTs with great potential to deliver benefits to the marginalized and the poor. Dr. Heeks says in this interview: "Many years ago IT was only delivering for the rich, now we see growing benefits with the ICTs expansion and are beginning to touch the lives of the poor as well."

This interview is about 14 minutes long and talks about the work of the Institute, the motivations behind their areas of work and a more detailed explanation of one of their projects. The Women's ICT based enterprises is a project observing how women in developing countries are using ICTs to create their own micro enterprises bringing income to their families.
